From 88 entrants in the 2003 American Trails Website contest CitrusBirdingTrail.com
was selected as the winning website for Education and Wildlife.
The Citrus County Birding Trail is part of the West Section of the Great Florida
Birding Trail. Citrus County, located on the West Section of Peninsular Florida
about seventy miles North of St. Petersburg provides a unique topography for all
birders. The eighteen birding trails created for the Great Florida Birding Trail
program take into account these unique features that make Citrus County and its
habitat for birds a special place. The county trail system is divided into the
three natural ecological characterizations that make up the geology of the county.
- Coastal Region from the Gulf of Mexico East to U.S. 19.
- The Brooksville Ridge Region from U.S. 19 East to U.S. 41.
- The Tsala Apopka Lake Region bounded on the East by the Withlacoochee River.
The Withlacoochee River serves as the Eastern and Northern boundary of the county.
The CitrusBirdingTrail.com website was designed by Rolf Auermann as a resource for
birders interested in learning more about the trails in Citrus County and the
birding opportunities unique to each trail. Each trail has a description of
location and habitat, access information, hours of operation, highlights and
birding opportunites. Visitors can also see a list of birds seen on each trail
over the course of a year-long census. Over 250 species of birds were counted
during the census period.
Some of the most sought after bird species that can be seen in Citrus County
include the Red-cockaded woodpecker, Bachman's Sparrow,
American White Pelican, Scrub Jay and many more.
