Rolling hills and naturally beautiful crystal clear springs, rivers and lakes set this section of Florida apart from other areas in the State. Environmentally and ecologically appealing, Citrus County covers a 683-square mile area, more than 152,000 acres of which have been set aside as public and protected lands. Most noteworthy, Citrus County is home to the largest herd of endangered manatees in the state and the largest colony of red cockaded woodpeckers in peninsular Florida. Citrus boasts seven "Outstanding Florida Waterways": Crystal River, Homosassa River, Chassahowitzka River, Withlacoochee River, Salt River, St. Martins River and Halls River. The County is rich in history. Pre-Columbian mound builders, Spanish explorers, Grover Cleveland, Winslow Homer, the fully restored 1912 Courthouse and History Museum, gigantic fishbowl, National Register Historic Neighborhoods, even Elvis Presley … all are a part of Citrus County's history and present day lore. There are festivals and events galore in Citrus County. Annual happenings include the Crystal River Jam, Florida Manatee Festival, Homosassa Arts, Crafts and Seafood Festival, Floral City Strawberry Festival, Heritage Village Scarecrow Festival, theatre, concerts, and lectures … something for everyone! Accommodations are plentiful and affordable. Visitors can choose from an up-scale resort to primitive tent camping in the 42,000-acre Withlacoochee State Forest, or anything in between. A variety of hotels/motels, fish camps, cottages, campgrounds, and bed and breakfasts will suit any desire. The average year-round temperature is 70 degrees, with an average of 294 days of sunshine. Winter temperatures average 60.1 degrees, while summer the averages 82.4 degrees. Crystal River, Inverness, and Homosassa are Citrus County's major cities. The County is located on Florida's Nature Coast (west-central) and the Gulf of Mexico, 60 miles northwest of Orlando and 70 miles north of Tampa Bay. Orlando and Tampa International Airports are within a 90-minute drive of Citrus County and are served by all major carriers. Gainesville Region Airport, located within an hour from Citrus, offers limited service. Airport car rentals are available. |
